What is a lady boner?

A "lady boner," also known as spontaneous clitoral erection, is a natural physiological response where the clitoris becomes engorged with blood, resulting in an erection. Unlike penile erections, which are often directly linked to sexual arousal, clitoral erections can occur spontaneously and aren't always connected to sexual thoughts or feelings. Various factors can contribute to them, including:

  • Hormonal fluctuations: Changes in estrogen levels throughout the menstrual cycle can influence clitoral engorgement.
  • Physical stimulation: Though not always sexual, non-sexual stimulation (like rubbing against clothing) can trigger a response.
  • Psychological factors: Stress, anxiety, excitement, or even sleep can cause spontaneous erections.
  • Medications: Certain medications can have side effects that include increased blood flow to the genitals.

It's important to understand that having a lady boner is entirely normal and a natural bodily function. There's nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about. Many women experience them without even realizing it, as the clitoris is largely internal. Like many aspects of female sexuality, societal norms and lack of open discussion contribute to feelings of awkwardness surrounding this common physiological event.
